Local SEO for Derby businesses
Showing up in the map results and the local organic listings when someone in Derby, or a town nearby, searches for what you do.
Most people looking for a local service type a short phrase and a place, or no place at all and let Google work out where they are. For a plumber in Allestree, an accountant near the Cathedral Quarter or a physio in Mickleover, the results that matter are the map pack and the handful of organic listings beneath it. Local SEO is the work of earning a place in both.
What we look at first
Before changing anything we map how your business currently appears. That means checking your Google Business Profile, the categories it uses, the service area you have set, and whether the name, address and contact details match what appears on your website and on the main directories. Mismatched details are common, especially for firms that have moved premises or merged, and they make it harder for Google to be confident about you.
We also look at the search results themselves from different points in and around the city. Results for "electrician" in Littleover can look quite different from results in Spondon or Chaddesden. Knowing where you appear, and where you drop away, tells us whether the problem is relevance, distance or prominence.
The work itself
- Google Business Profile. Correct primary and secondary categories, a complete services list, opening hours, photographs that show the real business, and regular posts where they make sense. We set up a simple process for asking customers for reviews and replying to them, but we never write or buy reviews.
- Location and service pages. If you serve Derby plus Belper, Ilkeston or Burton, each place you want to win needs a page that says something true and specific about working there, not the same paragraph with the town name swapped.
- Citations. We fix inconsistent listings on the directories that still carry weight, and ignore the hundreds that do not.
- Local links and mentions. Sponsorships, trade bodies, local press and partnerships you already have are often the quickest local links to secure.
- On-page basics. Clear titles, headings and internal links so each page has one job.
How long it takes
Profile fixes can show within weeks. Building prominence in a competitive category across the whole city takes longer, usually several months, and depends on how established the businesses above you are. We will tell you at the start which searches are realistic and which are a long climb.
Who it suits
Local SEO suits businesses where customers come from a defined patch: within the A38 and A52 ring, across Erewash, or up the Derwent valley. If most of your customers are national, our technical SEO and content work will matter more than the map pack.
What is included, step by step
- Baseline. We record where you appear today using a grid of ranking checks across your patch, your profile performance data (searches, calls, direction requests, website clicks) and enquiries arriving from search.
- Profile overhaul. Categories, services, description, hours, attributes, photographs and the website link. We remove duplicates and fix suggested edits that have crept in.
- Website alignment. Your contact page, footer and location details match the profile exactly. Each important service has its own page, and the page your profile links to clearly explains what you do and where.
- Reviews process. A short link and a habit: who asks, when, and how replies are handled. We draft reply guidance, you or your team send the replies.
- Citations. We correct the listings that matter for your sector, typically between ten and thirty, and stop chasing the rest.
- Area pages. Where you genuinely serve towns such as Belper or Ilkeston, we write pages that describe the work you do there.
- Local links. We list the organisations you already have a relationship with and ask for the links you are owed.
- Monthly cycle. Grid checks, profile updates, new photographs, review responses, and one or two improvements to pages each month.
Timescales in detail
| Work | When you might notice a difference |
|---|---|
| Category and profile fixes | Often within two to six weeks |
| Website alignment and new service pages | One to three months, once pages are crawled and indexed |
| Review growth and local links | Builds gradually over three to nine months |
These are typical patterns, not promises. A sole trader in a quiet category may move quickly; a solicitor competing in the city centre will take longer.
What drives the cost
Local SEO is priced on effort, and effort depends on a few things:
- How competitive your category is in Derby. Dentists, solicitors, estate agents and trades such as roofing attract more competition than a specialist repairer.
- How many locations or towns you serve. Each needs checking and usually its own page.
- The state of your website. If service pages need writing from scratch, there is more to do in the first months.
- Who does the implementation. If your team replies to reviews and takes photographs, the monthly fee is lower.
Across the UK, ongoing local SEO for a single-location small business commonly costs a few hundred pounds a month, rising for multi-location or highly competitive work. We quote after looking at your profile, site and competition, and we explain what the fee covers.
Common mistakes we see in Derby
Keyword-stuffed business names. "Smith Plumbing Derby Emergency Boiler Repair" breaks Google's guidelines. Competitors can report it, and the profile can be suspended.
- Choosing a broad category such as "Contractor" when "Roofing contractor" or "Kitchen remodeler" fits better.
- Linking the profile to the home page when a specific service or location page would match the search better.
- Opening hours that are wrong on bank holidays and over Christmas.
- Asking every customer for a review in one week and then stopping.
- Copying the same area page for Littleover, Allestree and Chaddesden with only the name changed.
How we measure it
We report three layers each month: visibility (grid rankings for your key searches across the city), engagement (profile calls, direction requests and website clicks), and outcomes (enquiries you can trace to search). Rankings alone can mislead, because they vary by where the searcher stands. The grid shows the full picture, and enquiries show whether it matters.
